Harriet Jean Johannsen, the daughter of Harry and Emma (Kaiser) Hill, was born January 12, 1929, in Sutherland, Iowa. She received her early education through the 5th grade in rural Waterman #4 one room school. She continued her education at Sutherland schools, where she was active in music. She also enjoyed marching band, and was chosen Homecoming queen in her senior year. She graduated from Sutherland High School, class of ‘47.
Harriet and Jim Johannsen became best friends in high school and they were married July 18, 1948. After their marriage, she worked as an Administrative Assistant and raised their four children. During their marriage, they lived in the communities of Sutherland, Storm Lake and later Spencer, Iowa, where they have made their home the last 35 years. She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Sutherland, and later the First Christian Church in Spencer, where she was involved in the CWF women’s group. She was also a hospice volunteer. Harriet and Jim were blessed with 13 years of wintering in Arizona, where they enjoyed hiking, golfing and spending time with new friends.
She passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa, on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at the age of 88. Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Valerie Stefaniak; three brothers: Mertin, Ned and Roger Hill; and two sisters: Patricia in infancy and Florence Brown.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jim of Spencer; her children: James (Cheryl) Johannsen of Johnstown, CO, David Johannsen and Barbara Potts of Sutherland, IA, and Rachel (Gordon) Buchanan of Spring Hill, TN; son-in-law, Scott Stefaniak of Sussex, WI; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Martin of Cedar Rapids, IA; one brother, Richard (Euena) Hill of Robins, IA; other relatives and many friends.
