Harry Theodore Jalas, the son of Henry and Mollie Maria Dorthea (Back) Jalas, was born on April 8, 1925, in Sutherland, Iowa. He was raised and went to school in Sutherland. Following his schooling he entered into military on January 10, 1946, serving in the U.S. Army. Harry was a Construction Machine Operator during his time in the service. He also received WWII Victory medal. He was honorably discharged on February 10, 1947.
On January 23, 1947, Harry married Esther Duncan in Dakota City, NE. Following their marriage, they farmed in the rural Sutherland area. Harry's passion was farming, he farmed all of his life, he never retired, he was the keeper of the land. He enjoyed being with family and friends, loved polka, waltz, and traditional hymns. He loved doing woodworking especially with oak. He shared all his projects with his family and the churches. He especially enjoyed making clocks.
Harry passed away on March 11, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Esther; his son, Dennis Jalas and his wife, Char of Sutherland, IA; his daughter, Linda Jungjohan of Terrell, TX; his daughter, Mary McLatchie and her husband, Bob of Mediapolis, IA; his son, Jim Jalas and his wife, Lori of Primghar, IA; his daughter, Carol Sadler and her husband, Rusty of Battle Creek, IA; 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 16, 2015, at the Church of Christ in Sutherland.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Church of Christ in Sutherland or Sanford Health Home Hospice of Sheldon
