Harry Vern Warren

April 16, 1908 — January 12, 2009

Harry Vern Warren was born April 16, 1908, on the family farm near Peterson, IA, the third child of Arthur and Frances (Doolittle) Warren. He attended Yankee School just a quarter mile away through the 8th grade and then went on to graduate from Peterson High School in 1925. He liked school, math especially, played baseball, and was especially proud of playing trumpet in the Blackmer Boys' Band. He worked on the family farm after graduation, played music with his brothers, Harold and Lawrence; and also met and courted a pretty redhead he met at the Maple Grove Church by the name of Joyce Fredenburg. He would drive to St. Peter, MN, to see her on the weekend. He said it was a long way on those gravel roads but worth it! In May of 1934 they were married at the farm home of Harold and Melva Woolston, Joyce's sister and brother-in-law, and began their life together just down the road from Harry's birthplace. To this union were born three children: Frances, Mary, and Jim. Harry and Joyce centered their home around the church and family as so many did back then. Harry was one of the supporters of Christian broadcasting in the area, specifically in the construction of the Sioux City (KTFC, Keep Talking For Christ) and Sioux Rapids (KTFG, Keep Talking For God) stations, and helped out there from time to time. They enjoyed traveling and their relatives and children obliged them by moving all over the USA. They put many miles on several cars going to see them in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, South Carolina, North Dakota, Texas--wherever they were. Two special trips were to Hawaii and to Ireland. Harry went home to see his Lord, and the wife he has so missed for 16 years, on January 12, 2009. He is remembered for his uncanny ability to repair absolutely anything, his quiet wisdom, his unexpected wit, and his unwavering support and love for his wife and children. He leaves to mourn his two daughters, Frances Alexander of Ayrshire and Mary Warren of Dallas, TX; his son, Jim and wife, Donna of Peterson, IA; five grandchildren and their spouses: Bob and Julie Alexander of Ruthven, IA, Susan and Myron Wike of Eaton, OH, Joseph and Susan Alexander of Milton, FL, Amanda and Robert Brackett of Weeping Water, NE, and Scott and Mary Ellen Warren of Dubuque, IA; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves his cousin, Norma Baker and husband, Stan of Graham, WA; his sisters'-in-law: Doris Steele of Sutherland, IA, and Melva Woolston of Bon Air, VA, and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
