Heidi Ann AKA, “Squirley” Schoorman, the daughter of Vernon and Betty (Banks) Schoorman, was born June 24, 1971, in Spencer, Iowa. She attended kindergarten and first grade at Everly Community School. After that she attended schools in Sioux City, Casper, WY, Williston, ND, and Rapid City, SD. She was engaged to be married to Carl Allen Leggett in April of 2023.
During the summer, Heidi and her older sister, Wendy, spent time in the Spencer and Everly area with Grandpa and Grandma Banks, and their dad and Bev, walking beans, freezing corn, and playing with their friends, the Ginger and Ostermann sisters (which included dropping Heidi down the laundry chute onto a pile of sofa cushions). Heidi returned to Everly in December 1988 to graduate with the EHS Class of ‘89. She waitressed at Barb’s Corner that summer and then moved to Denver, CO where she waitressed and worked at Target for 10 years with her good friend, Sherrie. In 2010 she came back to Spencer where she waitressed at Country Kitchen and American Classic Cafe. She also worked with Carl parttime in the cleaning business, C & H Amusements. She enjoyed reading, her kittens (she could even tell you their birthdates and that they were too cute to be true), riding her bicycle, talking on the phone, being near water, and cheering for the Denver Broncos and Colorado Avalanche.
On Friday, August 26, 2022, Heidi passed away at her home in Spencer at the age of 51. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Raymond & Edith “Eleanor” Banks and Kenneth & Helen Schoorman; parents, Betty in 1985, and Vernon in 2010 and uncles: Roger Schoorman & Dennis Simpson.
She is survived by her sister Wendy (Steven) Buchli of Morrison, CO; uncles Alan (Cherie) Banks of Spencer, IA, Galen (Ann) Banks) of Spencer, IA, and Brian (Belvia) Banks of Sutherland, IA; Robert Schoorman of Everly, IA, aunt Louise Simpson of Spencer, IA, step-mom Beverly Rinehart of Everly, IA and many cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and classmates.
Heidi was stubborn in some beliefs, but very smart. It took Carl 2 years before she would read Proverbs every day of the month. Heidi would always say Carl, you can change your circumstances by changing your “attitude”, and every so often she would say “Baby we need to get a bigger home for Chris & Kim, so that they could move in with us and would look at Carl and say that he had told her “the family that prays together, stays together”.
