Helen Dorothea Frykberg Mefferd was born February 14, 1920 to Thomas Frykberg, an immigrant from Sweden and Christine Jorgensen Frykberg, an immigrant from Denmark, on a farm near Albert City, Iowa. She grew up during the Great Depression and was molded by that experience.
Helen married Paul S. Mefferd on February 14, 1939. To this union seven children were born. She worked actively in the family business, Mefferd Industries, Inc., as Secretary & Treasurer and Director. For several years Helen was the accountant for her son's company TE Corporation. She and Paul were also owners of Cedar Creek Antiques. Helen had been a coordinator of Adventures in Attitudes, a personal development program.
She became active in local and state politics, hosting many parties for Governor Ray and other politicians. She attended a National Republican Convention. George H.W. Bush was a guest in her home before he became president. Governor Robert Ray appointed her to the Board of Cosmetology, which she served with great enthusiasm. Helen also held office and helped in many local clubs and civic programs. Helen and Paul opened their home and hearts to foreign exchange students Hasan Al-Hasawi and Mohammad Al-Qabandi of Kuwait who are still today considered members of their family.
Paul and Helen lived in Laurens for many years before moving to Spirit Lake in 1994, and later to Spencer. Helen was a woman with strong spiritual beliefs and a great faith in God. At Bethany Lutheran Church in Laurens, she served on the Church Council and held many different positions throughout many years.
Helen loved her family and enjoyed cooking, putting on big dinners and, with Paul, Dr. Harry and Evie Pitluck, honored the Laurens Teachers annually with a big smorgasbord. Her many interests included painting, crocheting, knitting, sewing and antique dolls.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters, husband Paul, and granddaughters: Heidi Hinn and Natalie Reveiz. Those left to honor her memory include her seven children: Pat (Ken) Boughey, Tom (Bonnie), Linda (Loren) Gustafson, Paulette (Ed) Reveiz, Kathleen (John) Hinn, Margaret (Larry) Beckman and Kristine (Dan) Van Berkum, 22 grandchildren and 39 (and one arriving soon) great-grandchildren.
Helen wanted to be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She experienced a rich, full and productive life.
