Helen Elaine Rohwer

Helen Elaine Rohwer, the daughter of Leo and Lena (Westphal) Struve, was born December 13, 1923, on a farm near Paullina, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Sutherland where she attended and graduated from Sutherland High School. Following graduation, Helen went to cosmetology school for one year in Sioux City, IA. Helen worked at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, IA, for many years. She also worked at Millie's Nursing Home in Sutherland, IA. In May of 1942, Helen was united in marriage to Sonny Rausch. In 1945, Sonny died from injuries sustained in Czechoslovakia during WW II. Helen was married to Loyd Rohwer in September 1946, in Sutherland, IA. Helen was a member of the Auxiliary and the Library Board in Sutherland. In her free time she enjoyed reading, baking, listening to the radio, but most of all she loved being around her family and friends. On November 29, 2007, Helen passed away at Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Sonny Rausch; second husband, Loyd Rohwer; one brother, Irvin Struve; and her parents. Left to cherish her memory are her children: David (Vickie) of Calumet, IA, Donna Vicki Fuller (Ray) Fuller and special friend Joyce Anderson, of Jefferson City, MO, Dennis (Gwen) Rohwer of Mankato, MN, Deb Rohwer (Denny) Anderson of Linn Grove, IA, Doug (Margaret) Rohwer of Marcus, IA, Todd Rohwer of Spencer, IA, Sue Ann (Scott) DeSpain of Vandenberg AFB in CA; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Bernadine Johannsen of Sutherland, IA, and Phyllis (Duane) Anderson of Peterson, IA; other relatives and friends.
