Margaret Helen Haaland, the daughter of Robert Lee and Lola Albertus (Bigler) Meredith, was born on December 17, 1927, in the original farmhouse on her family's farm in Clay County. She was raised and received her early education in Rossie, where she graduated from Rossie High School in 1946. Helen lived her entire life on the farm with the exception of the two years following her graduation when she attended Morningside College in Sioux City, IA.
Helen married T.J. Haaland on February 14, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived on her family farm in rural Rossie. Helen loved being on the farm, helping T.J. and raising her children. In 1982, the farm was recognized by the Iowa Department of Agriculture as a Century Farm. Helen was a member of the Church of Christ in Rossie and then joined the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Helen enjoyed being outside and loved spending time with her family and especially her grandkids.
A stroke on August 21, 2008, resulted in Helen spending the last year and a half of her life as a resident of St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa. During this time, Helen's life continued to blossom as she met many new friends, both staff and fellow residents. Helen was touched very deeply by the friendliness, compassion and love of the staff of St. Luke's and we will forever be grateful for their kindness.
Helen passed away on January 28, 2010, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, John and her sister, Joanne Carlson.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons: Paul Haaland of Laurens, IA and Joel Haaland of Royal, IA; her three daughters: Margaret Haaland and her husband, Phil Wheelock of Ames, IA; Maureen Christensen and her husband, Ron of Royal, IA and Marcia Baragary of McMinnville, OR; her daughter-in-law, Teresa Haaland of Nevada, IA; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.
