Helen Joy Porter, the daughter of George and Emma (Zeman) Lovrien was born December 16, 1930 in Laurens, IA. Her childhood years were spent in the Webb and Gillett Grove, IA area, where she attended school and graduated from Gillett Grove High School in 1948. She attended Buena Vista College in for 2 years. She received her BA degree from Buena Vista University in 1971.
Helen married Howard Porter on August 15, 1954 in Marathon, IA. She worked as a teacher in Marathon, Algona, Sioux Rapids, and Rembrandt, before retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Marathon Methodist Church and a member of United Methodist Women. Helen enjoyed her volunteer work at schools, teaching Sunday School, family reunions, quilting, gardening, swimming at the YMCA, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Helen passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, IA, at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, 4 sisters, Inez Lauritsen, Ruth Lovrien, Alice Carlson and Hope Leonard.
Left to cherish her memory are her three sons and their wives: Gregory (Bonnie) Porter of Callender, IA, Thomas (Joni) Porter of Rincon, GA, and Paul Porter of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Brad) Johnson, Kris (Matt) Breton, Justin Porter, Danelle Porter; 2 step-grandchildren, Hannah Cook and Sara (Chris) Swenson; 3 great-grandchildren, Porter and Crosby Breton and Willa Johnson; 2 sisters, Gladys Zweifel of Spirit Lake, IA and Shirley (Ray) Ohrtman of Spencer, IA; 2 brothers, Glenn Lovrien of Fullerton, CA and Robert Lovrien of Rockford, IL; other relatives; and many friends.
