Helen Laura (Anderson) Sheely, the daughter of Elmer “GE” and Laura Jane (Stauffacher) Starr, was born July 12, 1920 in Iowa City, IA. Her childhood years were spent in the LuVerne, IA area, where she received her early education. When she was 8 years old her family moved to Spencer, IA and she continued her education in Moneta schools. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Hartley.
After her schooling, Helen worked as a waitress at several restaurants including Bill’s Café and at the Clay County Fair. She also did ironing for families in the Spencer area.
Helen married Lyle Sheely on July 12, 1958 in Jackson, MN. After their marriage, Helen enjoyed driving a straight truck for a number of years alongside with Lyle. They settled in the Spencer, IA area during their marriage. Lyle passed away in 1977. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her great grandchildren. Helen also enjoyed tending her flowers, gardening, crocheting and working outside.
She passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, IA on Friday, April 26, 2019 at the age of 98. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle Sheely and son-in-law, Fritz Wagner.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Kay and her husband, Ron Reeves of Whittier, CA and Mitzi Wagner of Spencer, IA; 6 grandchildren: Kim Brenneis, Fred Wagner, Robin (Randy) Albert, Bill (Laurie) Wagner, Neil Reeves, Bob Reeves and; 7 great grandchildren: Makayla Brenneis, Emma Reaves, Tracy Gensen, Chris Albert, Doug Albert, Wesley Wagner and Dustin Wagner; 12 great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
