Helen Maxine Fitzloff-Vaa

Maxine, the daughter of Edd and Edith (Reardon) Olson, was born on her parent's farm south of Dickens, IA December 31, 1919. Her childhood years were spent on that farm and in Dickens with here grandparents, graduating from Dickens High School. After graduation she enjoyed working, having fun times with her close friends then married Lawrence Fitzloff in 1942. From that union two sons were born, Tim and Frank. Maxine raised Tim on her own while Lawrence served in the Army Air Corps in England during WWII. Upon his return in 1945, Lawrence, Maxine and Tim settled on a farm east of Spencer on Hwy 18. They remained on that farm until 1955 when Lawrence passed away. Thereafter, Maxine, Tim and Frank moved to Spencer. Maxine worked at local businesses Carroll's Bakery, The Three Sisters and Buggy Whip. She ended her working career as a bookkeeper for Mugge Feed Company. Maxine married Thelmer (Tally) Vaa in 1971 inheriting an extensive, loving family that welcomed her into their lives. Tally and Maxine lived and worked a farm south of Spencer on Hwy 71 until Tally's death in 1983. She then moved back to Spencer. In her younger days Maxine was active in the Moose and Eagle's Auxiliary, serving as an officer. She was a longtime member of the Grace United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed sewing, crewel, gardening, bowling, snowmobiling and spending time with friends and family. In her later years her favorite things to do were read, play cards, assemble puzzles, tend to her violets and houseplants and the weekly lunch outing with friends. In winter she would travel to Arizona for a few weeks to visit her sons, sister Marjean and their families. The remainder of the year would be spent with Tally's family celebrating holidays, birthdays and other special occasions. Maxine passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2013 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Lawrence and Tally, son Tim and brother Norvin Olson. Left to cherish her memory are her son Frank (Vicki) Fitzloff, daughter-in-law Marla Fitzloff, sister Marjean Mohr, sister-in-law Ginny Olson, stepdaughter JoAnn (Bruce) Ericson, stepson Claire (Cathie) Galvin, 16 Grandchildren, 34 Great Grandchildren, numerous other family members, friends and acquaintances. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Warner Chapel in Spencer.
