Helen Regina Bohr

Helen Regina Bohr was born August 18, 1925 in Kimball, South Dakota to Fred and Susan (Blasius) Schoenfelder. She grew up on her parents' farm near Plankinton, South Dakota. During her teenage years she stayed in the town of Plankinton, working for her room and board so that she could attend high school. Helen graduated from Plankinton High School in 1943. On November 17, 1943, Helen married Lawrence Bohr in Plankinton. Following their marriage they farmed in the area of Stickney, South Dakota until moving to Royal, Iowa in 1966. In Royal, Helen and Lawrence operated Royal Farm Supply and she was the bookkeeper for the business. After Lawrence's death in 1989 she worked for many years as a librarian at Royal Public Library. Helen was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, active in the Altar Society. Helen and Lawrence shared an enthusiasm for gardening. She was active in the Senior Center in Royal and enjoyed crocheting, crafts and sewing. An avid quilter, Helen made numerous quilts including quilts for all of her 18 grandchildren. Helen passed away on Sunday, April 24 at St. Luke Lutheran Home. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her infant son, William, eight brothers and three sisters. Left to cherish her memory are her seven children and their spouses: Gerald and Marilyn Bohr of Westfield, Kenneth and Pat Bohr of Royal, Linda Sherbo of Des Moines, Elaine and John Stiras of Brooklyn Park, MN, Nancy and Steven Lehman of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Diane and John Walter of Omaha, NE and Allen and Barb Bohr of Royal; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister; two brothers; other relatives and friends. Helen's family was her pride and joy.
