Helma Janet Hofsommer

Helma Janet Hofsommer, the daughter of Lars and Anna (Dovre) Schager, was born May 29, 1912 in Center Township, Allamakee, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Dows, Iowa, where she received her education, graduating from Dows High School. In her high school annual for 1930, Helma was quoted as saying 'There's Sunshine In My Heart'. Helma married Vernie George Hofsommer on May 13, 1933 in Osage, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home in Revillo, SD. In 1936, they moved to Callender, IA and lived there until 1943 at which time they moved to Fort Dodge, IA. In 1948, they moved to Spencer, Iowa where they purchased an insurance business, Hofsommer Insurance, which Vernie operated for many years. Helma was employed as a sales clerk for Poole's Clothing Store for many years. She was also employed by the House of Dorelle and Leuthold-Kraus. Helma was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was also active in her community with T.T.T. and was on the Care Review Committee at St. Luke Lutheran Home. She passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the age of 102. Helma was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sisters; her husband, Vernie in 1995; a daughter, Judy in 2013 and a foster son, Tim. Left to cherish her memory are one son, Don and his wife, Sandra Hofsommer of St. Cloud, MN; a foster son, James; grandchildren: Brian Hanna, Kathryn MacNally, Christina (Jeff) Blake, Kristine (Dan) Schimek and Knute (Nicole) Hofsommer; other relatives and friends.
