Herbert Eilers

February 3, 1940 — April 1, 2017

Herbert George Eilers was born February 3, 1940, in Carroll, Iowa to Harry Herman and Rose Ann (Vonnahme) Eilers. He received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Milford, Iowa. Herb worked for his father and brothers on the farm until enlisting in the Army in 1961. He served three years and ten months in Germany as an ambulance driver. During this time Herb also completed his GED. On June 23, 1972, Herb and Suzan Porter were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, Iowa. Two children joined the family, Jennifer Rose and Joel Robert. They spent the first few years on the family farm, engaged in farming. They moved to Spencer in 1970 where Herb worked for Eaton Corporation until his retirement. After retiring he began driving for Spencer Community School Transportation Department. He enjoyed the little ones he transported to and from school. Farming stayed in his life through all the flowers he loved to grow; he was always ready to share plantings with anyone. Herb was a 50 year member of the American Legion and a 38 year member of the Knights of Columbus in Spencer. As a member of Sacred Heart Church, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, sang in the Choir and played in the Bell Choir. Herb was involved with Boy Scouts for many years as a Scout Leader. Herb leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 46 years, Suzan; his daughter, Jennifer (Kevin) Black; his son, Joel (Jessica) Eilers; grandsons: Cade Eilers, Jack and Kasey Black; granddaughter, Allie Black; great- grandson, Zachary Black. He is also survived by his sister, Mardell Eilers; his brothers: Harold Eilers and Robert (Kathy) Eilers; as well as many nieces, nephews and so many friends. This beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend will be dearly missed. Herb passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. Waiting for him in heaven are his parents, sisters: Ella Mae Eilers, Rosemary Miller and brother, Harry J. Eilers.
