Hesper Mae Selk

December 22, 1915 — June 6, 2009

Hesper Mae Selk, the daughter of James M. and Cecile Meacham Libolt, was born December 22, 1915 in Cherokee County, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in rural Peterson, where she received her education, graduating from Brooke Consolidated School south of Peterson. Following high school, she attended Creighton Business School in Omaha. Mae married Elmer Herman Selk on April 19, 1938 in Canton, SD. Following their marriage, they lived near Larrabee and later Sutherland, Iowa. They eventually moved to a farm near Linn Grove. She worked at various schools as a cook, moving to Spencer in 1963 and moving back to Linn Grove in 1966. They made their home in Linn Grove until retiring and moving to Peterson in 1981. Mae was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Peterson. She was active in numerous card clubs, the Senior Citizens Center in Peterson and the Congregational Womens Association. Mae loved to bowl, cook, make crafts and play bridge. Mae passed away at the Sunset Knoll Nursing Home in Aurelia, Iowa on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; one son, Butch; one daughter, Joyce; a great grandchild, Kayla Selk; a son-in-law, Mahlon Phelps; 3 brothers: Wayne, James and Willard Libolt and two sisters, Annetta Griffeth and her twin, Esther Selk. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters: Carole Lea Phelps of Vinton, IA and Jody Braunschweig and her husband, Paul of Alta, IA; a daughter-in-law, Jeannie Koerselman of Sheldon, IA; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; three sisters: Adeline (Ted) Schipper of Paullina, IA, Lois Butler of Pueblo, CO and Alberta (Arnie) Schneider of Rapid City, SD; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the First Congregational Church in Peterson.

Visitation will begin 12 Noon Monday, June 8, with the family present from 6 to 8:00 P.M., Monday Evening at the Warner Funeral Home in Peterson.
