Howard Edwin Tibbetts, the son of Dell and Mabel Fields Tibbetts, was born July 8, 1926 in Peterson, Iowa. He grew up around the Peterson area and graduated from Peterson High School in 1943. Howard worked for John Deere Implement in Peterson for 3 years while in school and after graduation. He entered the Navy in 1944 and served on the U.S.S. Baldwin in the Atlantic, Pacific and China Theater during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. Howard received a life savings award at the Iowa State Fair on August 21, 1974, after performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Dale Heyer, whose life was in jeopardy after being struck by lightening.
Howard was united in marriage to Gladys Birchard-Bodenhamer on January 5, 1980 in Peterson, Iowa. They lived in the Peterson area, where he continued to farm in the summer and went south to Mission, Texas in the winter months for 15 years. He retired from farming in 1990. Howard loved to fish and did a lot of it, as well as reading and fixing things. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and also a member of the American Legion in Peterson. Howard thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and nieces and nephews and loved spending time with his family.
Howard passed away at his home in Peterson on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Roger in infancy and Delbert; a sister, Frances and a brother-in-law, Bud Medsker.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gladys (Birdie) Tibbetts of Peterson; three step children: Karen & Bill Collette of Jefferson, SD, Douglas and Sue Bodenhamer of Peterson, IA and Greg and Cheryl Bodenhamer of Rapid City, SD; 8 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren; two sisters: Melba Medsker of Peterson and Sheryl and her husband, Larry Carlson of Aurelia; a brother, Donald and his wife, Shayla Tibbetts of Peterson, IA; a brother-in-law, Bill Melton; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Tibbetts; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 6, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Peterson, Iowa.
