Howard Raymond Porter

Howard Raymond Porter, the son of Bert and Bessie (Merrell) Porter, was born June 26, 1923 in Albion, NE. His childhood years were spent in Boone County, Nebraska, where he received his early education in country schools. His family later moved to Marathon, Iowa, where he continued his high school education, graduating from Marathon High School in 1940. After his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WWII, until his honorable discharge. Howard married Helen Lovrien on August 15, 1954 in Marathon. After their marriage, he continued farming with his father in the Sioux Rapids and Marathon area, until retiring and moving to Spencer, Iowa in 1991. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Marathon and a life member of the American Legion Post #12. He passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the age of 91. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter Porter. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen of Spencer; his three sons and their wives: Gregory (Bonnie) Porter of Callender, IA, Thomas (Joni) Porter of Robins, IA and Paul (Amy) Porter of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Kris (Matt) Breton, Jennifer (Brad) Johnson, Justin Porter, Danelle Porter; 2 step-grandchildren, Hannah Cook and Sara (Chris) Swenson; other relatives and friends.
