Iris Carpenter Hanson, the daughter of C. Paul and Ruth (Foster) Carpenter, was born December 14, 1927, on a farm southwest of Dickens. She received her early education in rural schools in Clay County and attended high schools at Dickens, Gillett Grove, and Lake Township, graduating in 1945. She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College and Buena Vista College. She taught in the Lake Township and Greenville-Rossie Consolidated Schools.
In 1950, Iris was united in marriage to Gerald Hanson in Spencer. To this union two children were born: Randy and Rhonda. Most of their years, Gerald and Iris farmed in the Sioux Rapids, Estherville and Kenneth, Minnesota areas. They moved into Spencer, Iowa, in 1981. Iris worked for Professional Nurses in Spencer for several years.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and held positions in several churches where they lived. She especially enjoyed Mission work, particularly making quilts. Iris was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Spencer. She was a devoted homemaker and liked to be home. Her favorite time of day, early morning when she would study her Bible. Iris loved flowers and spent many hours working her gardens. She and Gerald were fans of Big Band music and attended many of those dances.
Iris passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Monday, March 18, 2019, at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Grace Bryce; brother, Paul Carpenter, Jr. and nephew, Barry Carpenter.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Gerald of Spencer; two children, Dr. Randy Hanson and wife, Susan of Redlands, CA; and Rhonda Clancey of Neenah, WI; five grandchildren: Sadie Gilbertson-Guirand, Katie (Colin) Millsom, Kim (Matt) Bayliss, Jered and Caleb Klima; four great-grandchildren: Kaelie and Cayden Millsom, Solveig Guirand, and Dylan Klima; and her sister, Joyce (Paul) Flaharty of Spencer, IA.
