Irma May Burgeson, the daughter of Ralph Blaine and Sylvia May (Harris) Woolston was born January 11, 1910, in Sutherland, IA. Her childhood years were spent in the Sutherland area where she attended school at Clay Willow Grove County School. She graduated from Peterson High School in 1927. She went on to graduate from Methodist School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA, as a Registered Nurse in 1931. On February 24, 1932, she married Clifford Burgeson on her parent's farm. They lived near Peterson where they farmed.
Irma was a lifetime member of the Maple Grove Church of God and held many offices. She was the pianist, sang in the choir, Sunday School teacher, member of Ladies Aid Society, WSCS secretary treasurer, attended weekly Bible Study and Sunday evening worship services. She was active with the Waterman State Church Camp YO LO TO GO. She was also a member of Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Parker Museum, Spencer Garden Club, and Business & Professional Women. She worked as an RN for Spencer Hospital. She was the First Vice President of Iowa Nurse's Association District 15 and named BPW Woman of the Year in 1977. She moved to Spencer in 1965. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidering, knitting, crocheting, and playing the bells at Riverview Terrace. Her and Clifford enjoyed time at their cottage in Okoboji, fishing trips in Canada and Alaska. They also traveled to 6 different countries in Europe on the Elevator Farming Tour. She enjoyed wintering at her home in Bradenton, FL.
Irma passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Spencer Hospital at the age of 103. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clifford in 2002; brother-in-law, Basil Deegan in 2000, son-in-law, Robert McDaniel in 1994; granddaughter, Marcia Gallegos in 2009, and niece, Kay Toliver in 2010.
