Irvin George Maaland, the son of George and Irene Simington Maaland was born February 5, 1944 in Spencer, IA. His childhood years were spent in Ruthven, IA where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. After his sophomore year in Ruthven, Irvin moved to Sutherland, IA where he graduated from high school in 1962. During this time Irvin enjoyed working on the farm with his mom and step-dad, Everett Amendt.
Irvin was drafted into the Army for 2 years and deployed in Vietnam. After he was discharged from the service he returned to Iowa and married Sharon Lee Stoner on June 25, 1967. They farmed in the Sutherland area and were members of Bethel Lutheran Church. Later they moved near Everly, IA to farm and raise animals and joined Hope Lutheran Church. In 1985 he began working for the area co-ops in Everly and Fostoria selling and delivering propane until his retirement in 2012.
Irvin loved life and everyone in it. This was evident by an ever-present smile that greeted everyone he met. Irvin enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, horses, team roping, bird watching and camping, especially when his children and grandchildren were with him. He loved parking cars on horseback at the Clay County Fair. In later years, Irvin would scour the countryside for old tractors to collect and bring back to running condition. He was still working on them till the day he passed!
