Irving Adelbert Merrill, the son of Adelbert and Beda (Anderson) Merrill, was born December 24, 1920, near Sioux Rapids, IA. His childhood years were spent in northwest Iowa where he received his education, graduating from Arnolds Park High School. After his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WW II until his honorable discharge in 1945. After his military duty, he attended and graduated from refrigeration and heating school in Chicago.
Irving married Darlene Smith on September 5, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Following their marriage, they lived in Portage, Wisconsin, where he worked as a fireman on the railroad for nine years. They moved to Spencer, IA, in 1957, where he worked for Spencer Foods for 21 years, and later at Eaton's for 10 years, until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, and the American Legion. Irv enjoyed fishing in Canada, baseball, and attending reunions in Texas with his Army buddies of the 36th Infantry Division.
He passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, IA, on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the age of 93. Irving was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene in 1999; his son, Bruce in 2009; two brothers, Leon and Howard; and one sister, Edith.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter-in-law, Jo Merrill of rural Greenville, IA; one sister, Lorraine Yager of Spencer, IA; two brothers: Eugene of Spencer, IA, and Wilbur or Okoboji, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
