Ivan Thiessen

Ivan Albert Thiessen, the son of Albert and Matilda (Duerksen) Thiessen was born September 5, 1954 in Mt. Lake, MN. His childhood years were spent in the Butterfield area, where he attended school, graduating from Butterfield-Odin High School, before attending Mankato Vocational School. Ivan married Sherill Howe on May 10, 1980 at the First Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake, MN. He worked at many places, including Leverson's, in Odin, MN, as a carpenter for his uncle, and Sperry in Jackson, MN. He moved to Spencer, IA in 1987 to work for Cablex, and was currently employed by General Machine. Ivan enjoyed gardening, helping people, and especially spending time with his family. He was happy to be in charge of the broom making at the Butterfield Thrashing Bee. He enjoyed talking to anyone who would listen, and was known as a jack of all trades and a master of none. He was a long-time board member of Spencer Family Church. Ivan passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the age of 60, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister-in-law, Lori Thiessen; and one niece, Cherrie Thiessen. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sherill of Spencer, IA; 2 children, David (Stephanie) Thiessen and Beth (Loren Jr.) Hicks, both of Spencer, IA; 5 grandchildren, Thade, Aneli, & Aiden Hicks, and Maya & Vivienne Thiessen; 2 brothers, Darwin (Virginia) of Darfur, MN and Lauren of Windom, MN; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
