Ivor George Reuter III was born on June 18, 1963 in Spencer, IA to Norma (Hanse) and Ivor Reuter. He passed from this life at the age of 54 on July 3, 2017 after a long and brave struggle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, while waiting on a lung transplant at the University of Iowa Hospital.
In the family, and with long time family friends, he went by the name Van. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1981. Ivor married Susan (Tvedte) Reuter on July 7, 1989, and they were later divorced.
At a very early age he demonstrated a high mechanical aptitude that led to a career in mechanics and audio engineering. As a boy he learned how mechanical and electrical apparatus worked by tearing them apart, but with that goal accomplished he lost interest in putting them back together.
He worked with his father, Ivor Jr., at Ivor's Truck Repair, where he impressed his dad with his troubleshooting abilities. He took a position with R&D Industries in Milford, IA in audio engineering. He then attended Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA and studied electrical engineering and AutoCAD. This education led him to positions with audio-visual system design and integration companies in Cedar Rapids, Urbandale, Des Moines, Waterloo, and Meridian, Mississippi.
Ivor was known for his bizarre sense of humor, and this was one trait that endeared him to so many people throughout his life. He had a near photographic memory and read extensively on an eclectic range of subjects, making him able to carry on lengthy conversations with just about anyone regarding just about anything. He had recall of Bible verses, blue prints, scientific journals, classic literature, training manuals, world history, and more, but he skated by in high school to the chagrin of his teachers.
Ivor is survived by parents, Ivor and Norma, brother, Craig (Kristi), niece Kayla, grandmother Madeleine Reuter, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
Ivor generously donated his eyes to the Iowa Eye Bank.
He will be laid to rest at Northlawn Cemetery in Spencer, next to his grandfather, Ivor G. Reuter, Sr., whom he adored.
