James Bang Christensen, the son of Peter Albert and Mary Christine Bang Christensen, was born November 14, 1914. Jake, as his siblings referred to him, spent his early years growing up south of Royal on the family farm with his sister and three brothers and attended the Willow Creek Country School. He was confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal on March 24, 1929. Jim graduated from Royal High School.
Jim married Clara Iona Steffen on May 2, 1936 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Royal. They continued to live in the Royal community on a farm east of Royal until they retired from farming in 1977 and moved to Spencer. Jim loved airplanes. In the 1930's he and his brother Harvey built 1 and 2 seat monoplanes and taught themselves to fly. In later years he continued to build radio controlled model airplanes and flew them in competitions in the area.
Jim passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at the Ruthven Community Care Center at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Mabel Percival, and three brothers, Harvey, Francis and Milton.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Russell Morey of Macomb, Illinois; one son James William and his wife Tami Christensen of Spencer, Iowa. Five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; Russell & Becky Morey, Christian and Joshua of Mt Pleasant, Iowa , Doug & Heather Morey of Kingwood, Texas, Lindsey & Jason Eckrich, Wade & Emaline of Riverside, Iowa, Lucas Christensen of Yokota Airbase Japan, and Weston Christensen of Spencer. Two sisters-in-law, Caroline Peterson of Newbury Park, California and Amanda Steffen of Spencer, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
