James Ray "J.R." Getting was born in Sanborn, Iowa on August 1, 1937 to Leslie and Margret (Pippinger) Getting. He was baptized on November 5, 1937 at the Methodist Church in Sanborn. Jim attended school in Sanborn and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1955. After high school, Jim continued his education for two years at Morningside College in Sioux City where he played football. Jim then attended the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration in June 1961. During the summer time, he worked for Graves Construction building bridges and roads. After graduating from college, Jim worked as a Certified Public Accountant in Carroll, IA. On September 9, 1962 Jim married DyAnn Tibbetts at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, Iowa. In 1963, he returned to Hartley where he drove a truck and was a livestock buyer for Getting & Son in Hartley. Jim opened his own accounting practice in 1966 in Spencer where he continued to practice for the remaining years of his life. Jim's clients were more than clients, he considered them to be friends.
On October 7, 2006 Jim was very proud to be inducted into the Morningside College Hall of Fame as a member of the 1956 North Central Conference Championship Football Team. Jim was a Boy Scout leader for many years and enjoyed all the outdoor activities of the Scouts, especially summer camp. When his sons were young he enjoyed taking them hunting and fishing and they went to Canada several times. Jim was a past Master of the Onyx Lodge in Sanborn, and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Spencer and Eastern Star Chapter # 116. Jim was a member of the ABU BEKR Shrine, Spencer Area Shrine Club, and the Spencer ATV Corp with whom he participated in parades during the summer. In his free time, Jim enjoyed going to casinos with DyAnn. He thrived on playing poker and cards with the guys each week and looked forward to this. He was an avid reader especially war stories as he liked history. Attending his grandchildren's extracurricular activities and spending time with his family were important to Jim.
