James Lee Brown, the son of Lee and Winifred (Gibbons) Brown, was born December 4, 1927 in Peterson, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Peterson, where he received his education, graduating from Peterson High School in 1945. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Navy during WWII from January of 1946 until his honorable discharge in March of 1947.
Jim married Mary Mason on October 10, 1951 in Cherokee, IA. Following their marriage, they lived in Peterson, IA, where he served as a rural mail carrier and Postmaster the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years, until his retirement in 1990. Following his retirement, he did plumbing and heating work with his father and then his son. Jim was a member of the First Congregational Church in Peterson. He was also active in the Peterson community, serving on the volunteer Fire Dept. for over 50 years, 25 of those years as Fire Chief. Jim was also an active member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge and the Lion's Club. Throughout the years, Jim and Mary enjoyed camping and spending time with their family.
Jim passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary of Peterson; his children: Mike Brown and his wife, Karen of Sutherland, Scott Brown and his wife, Debra of Peterson, Alice Wetherell and her husband, Mick of Cleghorn, IA, Bob Brown and his wife, Tammy of Peterson, IA and Dan Brown and his wife, Nicki of San Jose, CA; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Brown and his wife, Jane of Peterson, IA; his special friend, Sue; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at the First Congregational Church in Peterson.
Masonic Services will be held 5:00 P.M., Monday at the First Congregational Church in Peterson.
