James "Jim" Lyle Manzer, 69 of Wahpeton, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009, at the Longhouse Northshire Nursing Home in Spencer, IA after a valiant 10-year battle with heart disease that was filled with his incredible example of strength and optimism.
Jim was born September 7, 1939, in Colome, SD to Lyle and Bernice (DeMers) Manzer. He was the oldest of nine children and spent his early years helping his dad run the Standard Oil Gas Station in Colome.
Jim graduated from Colome High School in 1957, and joined the Army after graduation. He was stationed in France before his honorable discharge in 1959. When he returned, he went to work for Martin Marietta Corporation in Denver, CO.
In Denver, he met Helen Roper from North Little Rock, AR. The two were married in Colome, SD on February 8, 1964, where they lived until 1966, when Jim became the executive administrator for Colonial Manor in Sioux City, IA. In 1971, his family moved to Sac City, IA, where Jim served as administrator for Parkview Manor. In 1978, he bought Longhouse Northshire in Spencer, IA. His family moved to Wahpeton in 1993, and continued to own and operate the nursing home in Spencer until his death.
Jim was a faithful member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford. He was a member of the Wahpeton City Council and served on the board of directors for the State Bank of Spencer, Everly and Peterson.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Milford, IA; three children: Richard (Allison) Manzer of Denver, CO, Therese Manzer of Minneapolis, MN, and Matthew Manzer of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren: Shayne Manzer, Jessica, Madison, and Ryan Crosby; eight siblings: William (Jeanne) Manzer of Rock Springs, WY, Myrna Manzer of South Sioux City, NE, Marilyn (Marlin) Haukaas of Colome, SD, Donald (Dorothy) Manzer of Arp, TX, Robert (Judy) Manzer of Missoula, MT, Thomas (Jeanne) Manzer of Brookings, SD, David (Jan) Manzer of Newcastle, WY, and Marlene Manzer of Buckeye AZ; as well as nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant grandsons: Ty Richard Manzer and Trace Marcus Manzer.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, April 17, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford, Iowa.
