James (Jim) John Horst, son of Charles and Geneva Horst, was born on May 9, 1938 in Nobles County, MN. In his early years, he received his schooling in Sanborn, IA. After graduating high school, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy in September 1955. He spent his time aboard the USS Tallahatchie LST 1154 in the Mediterranean. He was proud to serve his country as a Boatswain Mate. Upon his Honorable Discharge, he met the love of his life Marjorie Bjorklund. They were united in marriage on June 6, 1970 in Sioux Rapids, IA. From this union one son was born, James Horst Jr.
Most of his life he worked at H & S Roofing as a foreman and took great pride in his work. Jim was a hardworking man who loved his family deeply and cherished the time he spent with them. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities. He especially enjoyed his time every morning with his crew at Sisters Mainstreet Café where he could spend time having a cup of coffee, solving the world’s problems, and teasing his buddies. He was a loyal member of Foundation Church in Spencer and he valued his faith.
Jim passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at the age of 81 at Longhouse Residence in Spencer. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Catherine Stallman; his son Johnny Kress.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years; sister Mary Jungers of Hawarden, IA; sister Margaret Pry of Hawarden, IA; sister Norene (Scott) Petrich of Colorado; daughter Deborah Helmke of Spencer, IA, son Kelly Kress of Ruthven, IA; son James Horst Jr. (Lisa) of Spencer, IA; 10 grandchildren Nicholas (Katie) Chapman of Spencer, IA; Jennifer (Tim) Von Ehwegen of Spencer, IA; Jamie (Josh) Bousquet of Sioux City, IA; Ty Helmke of Ruthven, IA; Sean Kress of Sioux City, IA; Jeramy Kress of Sioux City, IA; Zachary Jackson of Sioux City, IA; Drew Horst of Spencer, IA; Abigail Horst of Spencer, IA; Lauren Horst of Spencer, IA; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
