James Joseph Bock, the son Henry and Evelyn Weighner Bock, was born December 28, 1927 in Prairie du Chien, WI. Jim received his early education in La Crosse, WI. After graduating from Aquinas High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, class of 1946, Jim enlisted in the US Army. He served two years in Korea, and received his Honorable Discharge in 1948. Jim used his GI Benefits to continue his education, graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1952. On June 16, 1951, Jim married Ruth Virginia Knothe. Upon completing his degree, Ruth and Jim moved to Spencer, Iowa where Jim worked for Parke Davis as a pharmaceutical sales representative.
Jim was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and member of Golden-K. Jim was an avid reader, often volunteering with the reading programs in local elementary schools.
Jim and Ruth enjoyed bicycling. They participated in numerous RAGBRAIs and other rides in various parts of the country. Jim was an enthusiastic fisherman, hunter and a life-long Green Bay Packers fan. Each summer, until they discovered that they were no longer able to get themselves up off the ground, he and his friend, Jim Morony, maintained a huge vegetable garden. Some years it seemed that the produce from their garden was feeding most of Spencer.
Jim Bock passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the age of 88. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Wayne and Carl; sisters: Grace, Phyllis and Mary Ellen.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ruth of Spencer; sons: Jeff (Pat Jensen-Bock) Bock of Des Moines, IA and Christopher (Debbie) Bock of Circle Pines, MN; daughters: Patricia Bock (Frank Clements) of Charlotte, NC, Julie (Dave) Lacap of San Francisco, CA and Amy Bock of Los Gatos, CA; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
