James Joseph Umscheid, Sr., was the son of Louis John and Florence (Wittrock) Umscheid, born in Westport Township, Iowa, on June 6, 1931. James passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital on April 28, 2020, at the age of 88.
James married Barbara Anderson and four children: James Jr., Teri, Timothy and Tony were born to this union. On August 25, 1981, he married Beulah Jane Bonser Hanson.
James served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 – 1953. He worked at various jobs but spent his last working years at the Clay County Road Department for 21 years. James was a member of the Sioux Rapids American Legion. He was also a member and deacon of the Grace Congregational Church of Greenville. Family and friends were important to James. He loved spending time and visiting with them.
Left to cherish his memory are his spouse, Beulah; son, James Jr. (Mary Jo) of Spencer, IA; daughter, Teri (Kent) Grange of Sioux City, IA, and son, Tony of Kanawha, IA; sisters: Marjorie Gustoff, Spencer, IA, and Juanita Bueltel, Superior, IA; brothers: Don (Leslie) Umscheid of Kenosha, WI, and Fritz (Jeanette) Umscheid of Oregon; stepchildren: Cathy Gerdes of Garland, TX, Pam (Lance) Best of Graham, WA and Tom (Lorna) Hanson of Mountain Home, ID; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren five great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Umscheid; grandson, Adam Umscheid; his parents; infant sister, Marietta; brother, Robert and his wife, Bessie; brother, Richard and his wife, Delores; and brothers-in-law: Vernon Bueltel and Tike Gustoff, Sr.
