James Lee Huston, the son of Millard and Winifred (Daugherty) Huston, was born July 2, 1954 in Spencer, Iowa. He was baptized at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Jim attended Riverton #4 Country School until it closed and then attended special classes at Spencer Schools.
At age 18, he moved to the Handicap Village in Clear Lake, Iowa, where he worked every day and helped others in his cottage. James was involved at work, bowling, bell choir and Special Olympics for several years. He also attended Camp Sunnyside. In 1994, Jim moved to Spencer Sunshine Center in Spencer. In 1997, Jim moved again to Hope Haven in Orange City and traveled to Rock Valley 5 days a week to work at Hope Haven there. Jim lived in a waiver home in Orange City until Jan. 2018, when he moved to Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, Iowa. James was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer for most of his life. Jim’s parents were part of a group of parents that got the Special Ed Classes started in Spencer schools in the 1950’s and 60’s.
He passed away at the Prairie Ridge Care Center on Friday, February 14, 2020 at the age of 65. James was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Sharon Paulsen Sorenson and brother-in-law, Roger Paulsen.
Left to cherish his memory are two brothers: Gene (Mary) Huston of Spencer, IA; John (Marilynne) of Naples, FL; four sisters: Shirley (Verdeen) Bremer of Ida Grove, IA, Ruby (Terry) Peterson of Spencer, IA, Carol (Carl) Jensen of Everly, IA and Linda (Keith) Bress of Spencer, IA; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
