James Reed Schmeling

October 19, 1947 — March 29, 2013

James Reed Schmeling, the son of Clarence and Kathleen (Reed) Schmeling, was born October 19, 1947, in Dexter, Iowa. He received his early education attending school in Guthrie Center and then Spencer where he graduated from Spencer High School. James entered the military on February 3, 1969, serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on September 5, 1970. He transferred into the Army Reserves until February 2, 1975. Following his military service, he returned to Spencer. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Eagle's Club. He enjoyed being outside and doing yard work. He also liked taking his dog for rides in his pickup. James was a very kind person who never said a bad word of anyone. He was a very good and loyal son to his mother while he cared for her. James passed away on March 29, 2013, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jack. Left to cherish his memory are his aunts: Helen Wilson and husband, Fred of Omaha, NE, Winnie Schmeling of Casey, IA, Jean Schmeling of Guthrie Center, IA and Verna Fett of Adair, IA; one uncle, Kenny Schmeling of Casey, IA; several cousins; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. There will be a flag presentation at the church conducted by the American Legion - Glen Pedersen Post #1 and the V.F.W. Clay County Post #3159 of Spencer.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Northlawn Memorial Park Spencer, Iowa Following the services at the cemetery, there will be a lunch served in the fellowship hall at the church.
