James William "Colonel" Carey, the son of Joseph and Hazel Carey, was born December 21, 1924, in Varina, IA. His childhood years were spent in Varina. He received his education at St. Columbkille Catholic School where he later graduated. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U. S. Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
After his military service, Jim resided in Spencer, IA, where he was employed by Spencer Grocer Company running a pop delivery truck. On June 13, 1949, Jim was united in marriage to Marian Crane at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. In 1946 he went to work for Ed's Radio Ray as an electronics service technician. Jim soon worked his way in to sales and eventually managed the business. Following the owner's retirement in 1977, he purchased the business and renamed it Carey's TV and Stereo. Jim continued to operate the business for several years until turning the business over to his son, Mark. Both of Jim's children and his grandson, Joe remain active in the business to this day. Jim was proud of the fact that he saw so many changes in the TV industry in his years in the business, seeing the advancement from black and white to color TV, tube type to solid state circuitry, and then, finally, the evolution of High Definition television. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Jim enjoyed sharing time with his family, fishing, dancing, and playing pinochle. In his later years he liked to spend time at the store, greeting his friends and acquaintances there. He especially enjoyed the relationships with all those that he had worked with for so many years.
Jim passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Genevieve, LaVonne and Maxine.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marian of Spencer, IA; one son, Mark and his wife, Karen of Spencer; one daughter, Lisa Carey of Spencer; four grandchildren: Joe and his wife, Katy of Spencer, Paul of Boulder, CO, Adam of Spencer, and Andrew of Cedar Falls, IA; three great-grandchildren: Olivia, Jack and Janey Carey; one sister, Jeannie Rodgers of Mesa, AZ; other relatives and many friends and business associates.
