Jan Hinrich Stein was born in Westerende, Germany on February 12, 1939. His parents were Heyo and Tini (Kleen) Hedeman. He received his education in Germany and completed 3 years in baking training with an additional 2 years in bakers apprenticeship training. He was baptized and confirmed at the Bonifatius Lutheran Church in Arle, Germany.

Jan worked as a cook assist/baker on Freighter ships and travelled all over the world. In November of 1959, he moved to the United States and lived in Atlantic, IA.

He met his future bride, Diane Straub on July 1, 1962; and after 24 hours he proposed, she accepted, and they were married on February 1, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA.
