Jan Hinrich Stein was born in Westerende, Germany on February 12, 1939. His parents were Heyo and Tini (Kleen) Hedeman. He received his education in Germany and completed 3 years in baking training with an additional 2 years in bakers apprenticeship training. He was baptized and confirmed at the Bonifatius Lutheran Church in Arle, Germany.
Jan worked as a cook assist/baker on Freighter ships and travelled all over the world. In November of 1959, he moved to the United States and lived in Atlantic, IA.
He met his future bride, Diane Straub on July 1, 1962; and after 24 hours he proposed, she accepted, and they were married on February 1, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA.
Throughout his life he worked at Spencer Foods, Eatons, Topco Meats and Barb’s Restaurant. He became an American Citizen on April 28, 1966. He served in the United States Military for 2 years and received an honorable discharge in July of 1972. He was an active member of First English Lutheran Church. Jan enjoyed studying history, gardening and visiting with family and friends. He was fond of his pet dogs over the years and enjoyed giving treats to all the neighborhood pets who would come visit him on his deck. But most of all, he loved watching his family grow and was so proud of each new member added to it.
Jan passed away at his home in Spencer on January 29, 2023 at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Inga Schreiber and Gisela Hemken; his brother-in-law, Helmut Hemken; his sisters-in-law, Lynn Broyer and Sylvia Straub.
Jan is survived by his wife, Diane; two sons: Dean (Joni) Stein and Jay (Wendy) Stein; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; his brothers-in-law, Duane Straub and Johannes Schreiber; other family and many friends.
