Janice Clare McDaniel, age 81, of Sutherland, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at her Century Farm home North of Peterson.
Janice was born on June 5, 1933 on a farm South of Peterson, IA. to Irma May (Woolston) and Clifford Harold Burgeson, they later moved to a farm North of Peterson. She attended the country school Willow Grove #9 through 8th grade, then attended Sutherland High School with the class of 1951, where she was Miss Sutherland in 1949. She attended Maple Grove Church of God, where she met her sweetheart and married Robert McDaniel in 1950. She returned to SHS and graduated top of her class in 1957.
Bob and Janice began their married life on a farm N. of Peterson where they farmed for 44 years. Janice would take lunch to the men in the fields, or they would come to the house during hay bailing, bean walking, corn shelling or sorting cows and pigs for market. They raised four daughters, Patricia Lee, Cynthia Rose, Kristine Lin and Pamela Sue. Janice was a very sweet natured, kind, loving mother and wanted to teach her girls how to do things the right way. She sewed most of their matching dresses during their school years, then later their wedding and bridesmaid's dresses.
She was devoted to Maple Grove Church of God where she would decorate the altar, especially at harvest time. She sang in the choir and was their treasurer for many years. She held numerous offices in WCSC. She was also a cook and craft director at Camp YoLoToGo, 4-H leader, belonged to OAO and received her 50 year pin, Tuesday Club, Sutherland Home and Garden Club, Royal Country Gals Widow Club, The Red Hat Club, NW IA Cheerio Post Card Club, where she designed & printed hundreds of postcards to mail to her friends across the country, during National postcard Week May 1st. Janice lived on the family farm after Bob passed away in 1994.
Janice enjoyed the art of crafting, picture taking, scrapbooking, family genealogy, sewing, gardening, and cooking for her growing family. Church on Sunday, then rest, but she would always cook a roast, potatoes and carrots, (Grandma Sylvia Woolston would bring our favorite cream pie to church hoping someone would invite her to dinner) so we always had dessert too. Her famous foods she made were potato salad, ham balls, special K bars with chocolate, old fashioned cream pie and potato soup with dumplings. No one ever went away hungry.
Janice liked meeting people & going places. She met her companion, Wendell Tjossem. They enjoyed traveling to Texas where they were snow birds until spring and also enjoyed each other's company going to farm auctions, reunions, & parades, until last May when Janice was diagnosed with Cancer, She then stayed with Pam and Doug, and her final days with Cindy and Mike in the home where she grew up.
