Jay Dwight Hermstad

July 31, 1957 — August 14, 2010

Jay Dwight Hermstad, the son of Troy and Janet (Olson) Hermstad, was born July 31, 1957 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Cornell, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Sioux Rapids High School in 1976. Jay married Carol Schmidt on April 28, 1979 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, Jay worked at Simonson Iron Works until 1981, when they moved west of Webb and engaged in farming. In the early years, they raised hogs and later he operated a cow and calf operation along with crop farming. He was a trustee for Herdland Township for many years. Jay enjoyed working outside on the farm until dark and driving his John Deere tractors. He also enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, playing ping-pong and was always willing to help his next-door neighbors. Jay loved to spend time with his boys, who were always tagging along with him. Jay was always a happy-go-lucky person who had a great sense of humor and liked to play jokes on people. Jay died suddenly at Spencer Hospital on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the age of 53. His grandparents, his uncle, Milo and his cousin, Bruce, preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carol of Webb; two sons: Greg and David both at home on the farm; his parents, Troy and Janet Hermstad of Webb; one brother, Troy Jr. and his wife, Pat Hermstad of Sioux Rapids; his uncle, John Olson and his wife, Mavis of Spencer; his aunt, Colleen Hermstad of Spencer; one niece, Jessica Hermstad of Hull, IA and her friend, Jeff Larson; his father and mother-in-law, Dale and Mary Schmidt of Spencer, IA, his brother-in-law, Steve and his wife, Renee of Gardner, KS, other relatives and many, many friends.
