During her childhood years, she lived on a farm northeast of Spencer and attended classes in the Meadow Township one-room school nearby. Bernadine graduated from Spencer High School in 1935 and soon after completed Buena Vista College teaching courses. She then taught in a one-room school near her family home in Sioux Township.
