Josiah Francis Kelly ("Joe") Carroll, the son of John Edward and Ella Theresa (Kelly) Carroll, was born on July 27, 1924, in St. Paul, Minnesota. His family moved to Spencer, Iowa when he was four years old. After graduating from Spencer High School in 1942, he attended the University of Iowa for one year. Joe was called to serve in the military and joined the Army Air Corps during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his military service, he returned to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1949.
Joe married Jeanne Clark on January 19, 1953, in Spencer where they made their home. In 1955, Joe and his sister, Marge, assumed operation of Carroll's Bakery from his father and uncle and together they ran the business until their retirement in 1991. That same year, his wife, Jeanne, passed away. Joe was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a long time member of the choir and other musical groups, including the Barber Shoppers. Joe enjoyed playing the trombone and was a member of the Spencer Community Band for over seventy years. He always looked forward to playing in the University of Iowa Alumni Band at Homecoming. He was very active in the community as well as throughout Iowa. He was the president of the Iowa Retail Bakers Association, founding member of the Spencer Community Theatre, and provided many years of service to Kiwanis, Score, Rotary, Hospice, VOCA (Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance) as well as Spencer High School and Johnson Elementary School.
Joe married Mary Coats on July 18, 1998, in Spencer, where they enjoyed the last years of his life together.
Joe passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jeanne; sister Marge Carroll; and brother John Carroll.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mary of Spencer; his children: Dr. Kelly Carroll and his wife, Mary Anne, of East Moline, Illinois; Ned Carroll and his wife, Maureen, of Plymouth, MN; Dr. Sara Carroll-Anderson and her husband, Keith, of Aurora, Ill.; Matthew Carroll of Wayzata, MN.; and Dr. Laura Carroll-Contreras and her husband, Freddie, of Plymouth, MN.; 8 grandchildren, and many, many friends.
