Johanna Louise Erickson

Johanna Louise Erickson, the daughter of Gerhard and Caroline Beerman Lucken, was born April 20, 1914 near LeMars, Iowa. She graduated from Liberty Central, where she enjoyed playing basketball. She then attended National Business College in Sioux City and later worked for an insurance agency for four years. Jo married Theodore "Ted" Gustave Erickson on February 22, 1939 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Akron, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Westreville, SD, where they ran a general store. In 1946, they moved back to Sioux City where they owned and operated a grocery store. During this period of time, they welcomed three children, son, Gus, daughter, Caroline and son, David. In 1949, Johanna and family moved to Viborg, SD, where Ted was a territory manager for Cargill. The family made one final move to Spencer in 1958. Jo was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, TTT, Clay County Republicans, Ladies Auxiliary and the Hospital Auxiliary. She worked for a local physicians group and the library. She also volunteered for many organizations, including Hospice, AARP and the Senior Center. Johanna especially loved her family and friends and spending time with them. She will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring person who always remembered special occasions with a card, a call or a way to let those close to her know she was thinking of them. Johanna passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted in 1985; six brothers and six sisters. Johanna is survived by her son, Gus (Janet) Erickson of Clear Lake, IA, daughter, Caroline (Roger) Kurtenbach of Kingsley, IA and a son, David (Betty) Erickson of Georges Mills, NH; four grandchildren: Dr. Brad (Kristi) Erickson of West Des Moines, IA, Brian Erickson (fianc�e, Jenny Guddall) of Savannah, GA, Dianne (Curt) Ditmanson of Sioux Falls, SD and Darla Kurtenbach of Spencer, IA; two great grandchildren, Colby and Kelsey; brother-in-law, Bud Murphy; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Erickson and Merle Lucken; other relatives and friends.
