John Bert Groote

John Bert Groote the son of Lubertus and Lena Groote, was born in 1944 in Ashton, IA. He received his early education in Sibley and graduated from High School in 1962. Following graduation John attended Mankato State where he received a degree in Accounting. On April 6, 1969, John entered the military serving in the U. S. Army. While in the service John received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals, Army Commendation Medal and was also a Rifle Sharpshooter. He was honorably discharged on September 8, 1971. After the service, John worked at an accounting firm in Storm Lake for a couple of years, before attending law school at the University of Nebraska. He received his law degree in 1981. Following graduation, John moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he worked for a law practice for a short time before opening his own. John also lived in the communities of Alma, WI, Waukee, IA and Anacortes, WA, where he practiced law and also co-owned home furnishing stores with his partner. John loved sports, reading maps, cooking and gardening. John passed away at the Spencer Hospital on April 24, 2007, at the age of 62. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Milton. Left to cherish his memory are his partner, William H. Moody of Spencer, IA; his son, William Moody Jr., and his wife, Teddi of Everett, WA; two grandchildren, Hayden and Sylvie of Everett, WA; sister, Mary Cummings and her husband, Harland of Spencer, IA; sister-in-law, Irene Groote of Spencer, IA and his loyal dog and companion, Maddie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to People for Pets in Spencer, Iowa or the MDA-ALS Foundation, 2302 West First Street #107, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613.
