John J. Engelke, the son of William D. and Emma Meyer Engelke, was born May 11, 1921 in Sutherland, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Calumet area, where he received his education, graduating from Calumet High School. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Navy as a Flight Engineer 2nd Class from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
John married Marjory Ginger on July 10, 1948 in Sutherland, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in Sutherland, where they farmed for many years. John also owned and operated his own sand and gravel business in his later years. John was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and American Legion Post #152 of Sutherland. He enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with his family.
John passed away at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Engelke and a grandchild.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marjory of Sutherland; his children: Brian "Butch" Engelke and his wife, Betty, Bonnie Rohrs and her husband, David and Bruce Engelke all of Sutherland; grandchildren: Angie Engelke, Leigh Engelke, Vanessa & Bryan Steen and John Rohrs & Lynette Wilson; one sister, Elva Dau of Hartley; a brother, Robert Engelke of Paullina, IA; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 2,2009 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland.
Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion Post #152 of Sutherland.
