John 'Gerald' Vermeer

John Gerald VerMeer, the son of Case and Pauline (Breeman) VerMeer, was born September 11, 1944 in Rock Rapids, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Rock Rapids, where he received his education. Gerald married Sydney Hammer on November 12, 1965 in Hills, MN. They moved to Spencer, Iowa in 1966, where they raised five daughters. Gerald married Nancy Dau in Las Vegas on April 10, 1992. They made their home in Spencer, where he worked for Morton Buildings for 40 years, retiring in 2006. He didn't like retirement so the next week he went to work at Northwest Glass where he worked until March 2016 when he had to quit due to his health. Gerald enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and woodworking. He liked spending time at their place at Angler's Bay, Spirit Lake, IA. He was always helping others with repairs. He passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the age of 71. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Greg Quillin. Gerald is survived by his wife, Nancy of Spencer; his daughters: Teresa (Joe) Deeter of Dumas, TX, Traci (Mike) Hynes of Spencer, Toni Quillin of Spencer and Kelli (Chet) Yoes of Dickens, IA; his stepchildren: Sheila (Wade) Weaver of Sutherland, IA, Jason (Kelly) Kruse of Salvage, MN and Tricia (Damon) of Ellsworth, Wichita, KS; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; two brothers: Ike (Nancy) VerMeer of Graettinger and Pete (Judy) VerMeer of Lester, IA; other relatives and many friends.
