John Henry Elbert was born September 6, 1934, at Whittemore, Iowa, to August Elbert and Clotilda Kaschmitter Elbert. He attended Presentation Academy until 1951, when the family moved to LuVerne, Iowa, where he graduated from LuVerne High School in 1952.
Following graduation, he farmed with his father and worked at various part time jobs. In 1956, John joined the United States Navy, serving two years. He then returned to farm with his family.
On June 25, 1960, he was united in marriage to Gertrude (Trudy) Galloway in Laurens, Iowa. Five children were born to the family.
In 1964, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where John worked at and later managed Bjornstad Hardware. When the business was sold, he began working for A&M Laundry where he remained until retirement in 2004.
John was a member of Sacred Heart Church where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Spencer Lions Club where he served in several offices, was honored as Lion of the Year, and received the Melvin Jones Award.
John loved watching his children and grandchildren at their activities and ball games. He coached Cap League, Little League and Pony League baseball for many years.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Trudy, children: Mike Elbert (Renee) of Kansas City, MO, Julie Moran (Rob) of Ruthven, IA, Lynn Nielsen (Dennis), Roland, IA, Janette Nelson (Jim) of West Okoboji, IA, Kyle Elbert (Cindy) of Bloomington, MN, fifteen grandchildren, Brandon, Nick, Jared, Adam, Rachel, Emily, Shane, Nicole, Kayla, Ryan, Garrett, Amy, Kristin, Jack and Emma, and ten great grandchildren Eisley, Cooper, Leona, Oliver, Ossie, Charlotte, Vera, Tatum, Dallas and Talyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother in-law, Jess and Lila Galloway, brothers Ed, Paul, & Robert, and sisters, Louise, Gladys, and Ruth.
