John “Jack” Girard Peasley was born to William and Anna Kendergan Peasley on January 31, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended St. Boniface School. Later, he worked for Goodwill Industries. Jack was proud of making rugs at home with his mother on his own loom. A favorite pastime was visiting Grandview Park and having his picture taken by Abe Lincoln’s statue.
When Jack’s mother died, he resided with family members and in assisted living until he moved to Spencer. His niece Judy maintains that Jack was born again in 1990 when he moved to Spencer and began to live independently. His greatest delights were working for Sunshine Services, living independently, and attending Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Earning and cashing paychecks were accomplishments for Jack. He liked to draw pictures for loved ones, and he particularly enjoyed listening to KICD, polka music, and eating pancakes and omelets.
Jack passed away on February 21, 2018 at the age of eighty eight. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna, brothers Clem and Bob, three sisters, Margaret, Frances, and twin sister Jean. Jack is survived nieces Judy Johnson of Spencer and Janet Peter of Des Moines, a brother-in-law, John Thompson of St. Louis Park, MN, niece, Nancy Danielson of Montrose, MN, nephew, Doug Thompson of St. Louis Park, MN and one cousin, J. Robert Coates of Wheeling, IL, as well as many great nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Jack never knew a stranger.
Memorials or tributes may be sent in Jack’s name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, Iowa. Jack’s family remains grateful for the love and support of Longhouse staff over the last three years, the John Ingvall family, and Carmie Miller and family who cared for Jack when he was at Sunshine.
Mark 10:31… many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
As Father Schrieber once said, “Jack is God’s special child.”
A Celebration of Life will be held later when the birds sing and the flowers bloom.
