John Lewis Smith

February 25, 1922 — December 30, 2014

John Lewis Smith, the son of Jacob and Lena (Schultz) Smith was born February 25, 1922 in Havelock, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Havelock area, where he attended school. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school, serving in both World War II and the Korean War, until his Honorable Discharge. He married Leona Hanson on May 21, 1950 in Fort Dodge, IA. They lived in Oakland, CA until moving to Fort Dodge where he worked for Celotex. He retired in 1982 and moved to Minneapolis, MN for four years, until moving to Spencer, IA in 1986. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, being outdoors, playing guitar and gardening, but his greatest joy was spending time with family. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. John passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Spencer Hospital at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Lillian Auten and Clara Gist. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Leona of Spencer, IA; 2 sons, Dennis (Lynn) Smith of Eagle, ID and David (Crystal) Smith of Henderson, NV; 2 grandchildren, James and Shelby; one great-grandchild, Annabella; one nephew; 3 nieces; other relatives; and many friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Great Lakes Lutheran School in Spencer.
SERVICES
Funeral services will take place 2:30 P.M., Saturday, January 3, at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
