John Metcalfe

November 21, 1928 — September 10, 2013

John Metcalfe, son of James and Dorice Whatmuff Metcalfe was born November 21, 1928 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He spent his childhood in Canada before getting his GED. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated with honors from Park College in Kansas. John served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years where he worked as a weather forecaster and received multiple commendations. He married Nicole Herbin on July 29, 1957 in Blessonville, France. After his honorable discharge he worked as a regional administrator for the DNR until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the YMCA and St. Albans Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake. He enjoyed playing Snooker and Handball. Giving to those less fortunate was important to John. He donated both time and money to many charitable organizations throughout his life. John passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters, Laura and Louise. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Nicole of Spencer, IA; 4 children, Dorice (Lisa) Porter of Spencer, IA James (Carla) Metcalfe of Chanute, KS, Jack (Sally) Metcalfe of San Antonio, TX, and Laura Metcalfe of Le Sueur, MN; 3 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will take place 1:00 P.M., Saturday, September 14, at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

VISITATION
Visitation will take place Friday, September 13, at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer, starting at 5:00 P.M., with family present from 5-7:00 P.M.
