John William Prentice, the son of Lawrence and Katherin Whalen Prentice, was born May 7, 1912 in Sac County near Nemaha, Iowa. His family moved when he was three years old to Clay County, Iowa. He received his education at Logan #7 country school in Clay County. He was baptized on April 6, 1952 at the Community Methodist Church in Gillett Grove, Iowa.
John married Bernice Brinkley on April 27, 1935 in Yankton, South Dakota. Following their marriage, they farmed for many years in Logan Township in Clay County. Bernice passed away on August 16, 1974.
John married Doris Sanderson on January 13, 1977 at the United Methodist Church in Pharr, Texas. They continued to farm until their retirement in 1991 after farming on the Cornwall farm for 54 years. Doris passed away on December 2, 2001. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Webb, Iowa.
John passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents; both of his wives; three sisters: Zelda, Lois and Helen & a son-in-law, Francis Jackson.
He is survived by two sons and their wives: Bruce and Shirley Prentice of Maywood, West Okoboji, Iowa and Mike and Trish Prentice of Austin, Texas; two daughters: Kathy Prentice of Spirit Lake, IA and Jean Jackson of Spencer; 8 grandchildren and their spouses: Jerry & Tamra Prentice, Danny & Lea Ann Prentice, Cindy Prentice, Becky and Bill Samborski, Rodney and Teri Jackson, Jodi and Paul Preston, Laura Prentice and Jill Prentice; 9 great grandchildren and their spouses: Cassie Prentice, Charles and Emily Prentice, Stacy Prentice, Mathew Prentice, Will Samborski, Samantha Jackson, Alyssa Jackson, Colton Preston and Breazi Preston; his brothers and sisters: Lawrence Prentice of Nelson, MN, Wanda Stoermer of Spencer, IA, Maxine Burdette of Gillett Grove, IA and Eunice Langfitt of Armstrong, IA; a brother-in-law, Alfred Van Briesen of Rock Rapids, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 19, 2006 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
