Joyce Susan Raveling passed away April 21, 2013 in Seattle Washington. She was born March 11, 1955, to Ellen (Grange) and Thomas Raveling in Spencer, IA, and was raised in Peterson, IA where she graduated from Sioux Valley High School in 1973. Joyce received her B.A. from Yankton College in 1976 and received two M.S. degrees from the University of Oregon; one in Educational Policy and Management in 1981, and the second in Counseling Psychology in 1982. She then moved to Seattle, WA and began work at Seattle Pacific University and later was employed by the University of Washington. She will receive her PhD posthumously from the University of Washington in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in June 2013.
Her deep faith guided her in concern for others. Whatever Joyce did, she provided leadership and compassion. At the University Presbyterian Church inSeattle, she was the event coordinator and team lead for World Markets. She also initiated Longest Night Services which reached out to those who were reminded of deep loss during the holidays. In addition, she and another UPC member wrote the Bible study guide that paralleled the sermon series. Because of her passion for helping undergraduate and diverse student populations, she continued pursuing her doctoral degree until her premature death. She was also an animal lover, particularly cats. Clara, her cat, will miss her greatly. She was an avid sports fan. Keeping track of the latest sports news was a passion.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew. She is survived by her sister, Rita Riis (Norman) of Boulder, CO; two brothers, Thomas Raveling (Sandra) of Cassville, WI; and David Raveling (Barbara) of Spencer, IA, one nephew, Anthony Raveling (Erin) Phoenix, AZ, four nieces, Christine Wilbrecht (Erich) of Jackson, WY, Susanne Riis, Boulder, CO, Anne Johnson (Ryan) Spencer, IA, Katherine Raveling, Phoenix, AZ, five grandnephews, two grandnieces, and stepmother Delores Raveling (Thomas) Peterson, IA.
