Julian Jasper 'Bud' Lovitt

Julian Jasper 'Bud' Lovitt was born on January 31, 1924, in Morrill, NE. He graduated from Gering, NE., High School in 1942 and on December 20, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After basic training and electrician's school, Bud earned his EM3 stripes. He served in the South Pacific Theater of war aboard a destroyer escort and later on a tanker as a gyroscope specialist. He was honorably discharged on January 5, 1946 as an EM2. On August 25, 1946, Bud married Clarian Bittinger in her parents' home in Spencer. He attended an air conditioning and refrigeration school in Des Moines. After ten years of living in various places in Nebraska, Iowa and North Dakota and with three small sons in tow, the family moved back to Spencer and have lived here since. Bud worked for Spencer Packing Company until its closing, then in the service department of H&N Garage until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Hope Reformed Church, Parker Historical Society and a 25 year-member of the American Legion Post #1. He served many years with the Legion Honor Guard, was often a donor at the Red Cross Bloodmobile and volunteered as a driver for cancer patients to Sioux City and Rochester. During his high school years he was active in all sports and was a coach and umpire when his sons were in little league. Bud also had many interests, like gardening, traveling, bowling, golfing, square-dancing, woodworking and playing cards at the Senior Center with other friends. Bud passed away on July 17, 2011, at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters and three brothers. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Clarian; his brother, Donald of Lancaster, CA; his three sons and their wives: David and Mary of Spring Branch, TX, Wayne and Barbara of Madison, SD and Gene (Randy) of Spencer; his grandchildren and their spouses: Aaron and Erin Lovitt, Amanda Lovitt, Adam and Alisa Lovitt, Emelye and Tim Cunningham, as well as great-granddaughters: Meghan, Morrigan and Addison Lovitt and Lucy Cunningham, foster sons: Hung and Quang Ong and their families of the Dallas, TX area. His extended family and many friends also mourn Bud's passing.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Hope Reformed Church in Spencer. A military flag presentation will be conducted by American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 of Spencer, Iowa following the services at church.

Visitation will begin 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 20, 2011 with the family present from 5 to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday Evening at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

INTERMENT
Private family burial will be held at a later date. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be directed to Hope Reformed Church or the Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross.
