Julie Marie Benson, the beloved daughter of Jerry and Gina (Bates) Huber, was born November 11, 1981 in Spencer, IA. Julie had a joyous personality, infectious laugh, and a perpetual inner light that shone forth for all to see. Her love of learning and science was her motivation to major in Chemistry at Briar Cliff University where she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2004. Julie then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Chemistry Education from South Dakota State University in 2010. She blossomed and flourished in her career at O’Gorman High School in Sioux Falls, SD, where she taught advanced chemistry classes for 14 years.
On June 24, 2006, Julie married Michael Benson at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. They made their home in Sioux Falls and Harrisburg, SD where she gave to this world three beautiful children. She was a faithful member of St. John Paul II Parish in Harrisburg. Among many activities, she enjoyed traveling and exploring new places, shopping for sales at Kohl’s, eating delicious food and desserts, and telling people what they should be doing. Most of all, she loved her time spent with her sweet kiddos and wonderful family. On July 25, 2019, following a lengthy battle that she fought so determinedly and courageously, Julie was surrounded by the palpable love of family and friends as she began the next journey of Life. Though we will forever walk in her saintly shadow, our “Punkin” has made each person whose life she has touched more understanding to others’ unseen challenges and compels us to act much more gently with patience, tolerance, and care. Ultimately, the impact she has made on peoples’ lives is simply too great for words.
While prayer warriors near and far have been asking God for a miracle for Julie, those that celebrate her life have come to recognize that Julie was the miracle from God. Julie had an innate passion for teaching and many of her students have gone on to be medical doctors. Perhaps someday soon, one of her former students will discover a miracle—a cure for colorectal cancer. For the countless number of people that have been riding the roller coaster with Julie for almost 3 years, it was a miracle that we were given the opportunity to appreciate and revel in every moment spent in her extraordinary presence. And above all, to love and be loved by Julie was a remarkable privilege, which is a profound miracle in itself.
Julie is reunited with her grandparents, Art and Mary Alice Bates; and Edmund and Rosalie Huber. Left to embrace her beautiful soul are her husband, Michael of Harrisburg, SD; three children: Megan, Jacob, and Alex; her parents Jerry and Gina Huber of Spencer; a brother Jared and his wife, Megan Huber and their children of Sioux City, IA; a sister Emily and her husband, Zach Johnson of West Fargo, ND; parents in-law Rich and Betty Benson of Remsen, IA; brothers and sisters in-law Matthew and Laura Benson, Mary and Pete Best, and their children; thirteen aunts and uncles, a whole slew of cousins, many other relatives, and dear friends.
In honor of Julie, rejoice her life by consuming a medium-grilled big hunk of meat or a freshly-blended strawberry daiquiri.
