Karen Marie VanderVeen, the daughter of Louis John and Marie Lucille (Botsford) Hollander, was born November 29, 1943, in Artesia, CA. Her childhood years were spent in Sheldon, IA, where she received her education.
Karen married Harvey VanderVeen on February 21, 1962, in Sheldon, IA. Following their marriage, they made their home in Orange City, IA. Karen and Harv's careers took them many places throughout Iowa until they located to Spencer, IA, around 1978. Karen held different positions throughout the community until her retirement due to health reasons. Throughout their marriage, Karen and Harv fostered many children. Karen had a love for animals and was active in "People For Pets." She enjoyed being active in the Fostoria United Methodist Church which she was a member of. Karen enjoyed reading, collecting salt and pepper shakers, but most important to her was her family.
Karen passed away at the Avera McKennan Hospital on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the age of 70. She was preceded in death by her parents: Louis and Marie Hollander; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Nell VanderVeen; brother, Gary Hollander; sister-in-law, Betty Kiel; and brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Karen VanderVeen.
She is survived by her husband, Harvey VanderVeen of Spencer, IA; one daughter, Brittany Spooner of Spencer, IA; three sons: Bradley of Spirit Lake, IA, Barry who lives at home, and Brady of Hospers, IA; 9 grandchildren: Autumn, Kaitlyn, Kiahna, Chloe, Jase, Xena, Brett, Christian and Hailey; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 3, at the Warner Chapel, Spencer, Iowa.
